The Swansea Fire Department is staffed with a full time Fire Chief and Deputy Chief, along with 35 paid on-call volunteers. The (POC) members receive $8.00 for each call that they answer! We average about 13 firefighters per call. The Fire Chief is appointed by the Mayor and reports to the Village Administrator. The Fire Department falls under the Public Safety Committee. This is where all budget requests and operational aspects are handled. The Insurance Service Office (ISO) located in Chicago, has assigned Swansea a Class 4 fire insurance rating. This rating is used by insurance companies to determine insurance premiums. The scale is from 1 to 10 with 1 being the lowest or best rating and 10 the worst. The 4 rating is comparable to departments in our area that are staffed on a full-time basis. The rating process considers: 1. The needed fire flow for the area. 2. How a department receives and handles reported fires (dispatching). 3. The fire department itself including equipment, training, and on-duty strength. 4. Water supply available for fire suppression in the city. Please feel free to contact us for more information.
