Opening a Business

To open a business in Swansea, follow these steps:

  1. Contact the Building and Zoning Department at (618) 234-0044 or email ganderson@swanseail.org. Our office is located at 1444 Boul Avenue, Swansea, Illinois 62226.

  2. Obtain necessary approvals:

    • Some approvals are from the department; others need approval from the Planning and Zoning Board and Village Board of Trustees.
    • Meetings are held monthly: Planning and Zoning Board meets every second Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., and the Board of Trustees meets on the first and third Mondays at 7:30 p.m.

  3. Schedule and pay for an inspection by the Building and Zoning Department and Swansea Fire Department. Costs are $50.00, or $60.00 for spaces over 5000 square feet. Compliance with codes may require permits for construction or repairs.

  4. Secure permits for property maintenance and any modifications to the building. Fees vary: $20 each for minor modifications; fees for larger modifications are based on square footage.

  5. Obtain a $50.00 Sign Permit from the Building and Zoning Department before installing any exterior signs.

  6. Annually, register your business with the Village by April 30th for $25.00. Forms are sent in March and include business details for emergency contacts.
