Street Department

Swansea streets are cared for by our Public Works Department. They handle repairs, maintain rights-of-way, sweep streets, remove snow, and erect and upkeep street signs. Major repairs and new street construction are typically done through contracts with outside firms under the Salt Ready to Spread on Swansea Streets program. Some streets in Swansea are owned and maintained by St. Clair County or the State of Illinois. While the Village manages traffic on these streets, maintenance, repairs, and cleaning are handled by the respective authorities.

Storm Damage Policy: The Village has a resolution on removing trees from streets maintained by the Village due to storm damage.

The Village of Swansea passed an ordinance on June 18, 2018, establishing prevailing wage rates for public works construction effective June 1, 2018.

According to the "AN ACT regulating wages of laborers, mechanics, and other workers employed in any public works," approved June 26, 1941, as amended, the ordinance ensures that wages for laborers, mechanics, and other workers involved in public works construction within the Village's jurisdiction are in line with prevailing rates in St. Clair County. These rates can be found on the Department of Labor website. For the IDOL Prevailing Wage determination specific to St. Clair County, you can visit their website and follow the menu options.
